12 BALLOT PROPOSALS BEING DEVELOPED

March 9, 2018

by Farm News Media

None of the proposals listed here have gone through all of the steps to gain ballot access.
Twelve potential ballot initiatives could be on the Nov. 6 Michigan election ballot, according to Matt Kapp, elections specialist with Michigan Farm Bureau.

For a proposal to make the ballot, he said, several steps need to be met, including: board of canvassers approving the petition form, signature collection, verification that the required number of valid signatures have been collected, surviving any legal challenges, etc.

None of the proposals listed here have gone through all of the steps to gain ballot access.MFB has not yet taken a position on these ballot issues; although based on current Farm Bureau policy, our likely position should be obvious, Kapp said.

The potential ballot initiatives are:

KEEP OUR LAKES GREAT

The proposed initiated law would enact the Great Lakes Pipeline Safety Regulation Act to terminate an existing Straits of Mackinaw pipeline easement and prohibit the state from granting easements for pipelines to transport crude oil or liquid petroleum products over, through, under or upon Great Lakes bottom lands.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB has no policy on pipelines in the Great Lakes. MFB supports lifting the ban on directional drilling for oil and natural gas under the Great Lakes. The broad language impacting the state from granting easements could negatively impact energy transmission.

COALITION TO REGULATE MARIJUANA LIKE ALCOHOL

The proposed initiated law would authorize the personal possession and use of marijuana by individuals aged 21 years and older and control the commercial production and distribution of marijuana.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB policy opposes the legalization of marijuana.

Why would mfb opposes as natural plant there should be no regulation on marijuana.

There was a time when you could pay your taxes with yes marijuana

PROTECTING MICHIGAN TAXPAYERS

The proposed initiated law would repeal the Prevailing Wages and Fringe Act, 1965 PA 166, MCL 408.551 to 408.558.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB policy supports the removal of state mandated wage guidelines which may not reflect actual market conditions.

RAISE MICHIGAN

The proposed initiated law would create the Earned Sick Time Act, requiring employers to provide paid sick leave for personal or family health purposes and providing penalties for violations of the Act.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: AFBF policy opposes mandating earned sick leave for employees. MFB policy is silent on this issue.

This should be up to the employers if they want and can afford it !!!

CLEAN MICHIGAN

The proposed constitutional amendment would require a part-time legislature and limit legislator compensation and retirement benefits.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB opposes the concept of a part-time legislature.

This would be a good thing if it would go all the way up to the governor and kick the lobbiest out, We don’t need most of the stuff they are doing and we the tax payers cant afford it.!!

VOTERS NOT POLITICIANS

The proposed constitutional amendment would create a new commission tasked with redrawing legislative district boundaries every 10 years. The group wants to have independent public oversight over the redistricting process through a 13-member commission.

There is no need to create any new commission for redistricting or anything else !! .

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB supports the current Apol standards of redistricting.

MICHIGAN ONE FAIR WAGE

The proposal would increase Michigans minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2022 and require annual inflationary adjustments.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB opposes the state minimum wage being higher than the federal minimum wage.

MI TIME TO CARE

The proposal would require employers to provide and authorize employees to use sick leave subject to certain conditions.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: AFBF policy opposes mandating earned sick leave for employees. MFB policy is silent on this issue.

Again this should be up to the employer and the company not the government!!

ABROGATE PROHIBITION MICHIGAN

The proposed constitutional amendment would legalize the agricultural, personal, recreational, commercial or other use of marijuana.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB policy opposes the legalization of marijuana.

Nothing wrong here at one time here farmers were required to raise a certian amount and Henry Ford was the largest producer in Michigan!!

PROTECT MICHIGAN JOBS

The proposed initiated law would enact the Construction Workers Fair Wage Act, which would require prevailing wage and fringe benefits on state projects.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB supports the removal of state mandated wage guidelines which may not reflect actual market conditions.

NO NEED FOR A Construction Workers Fair Wage AcT MOST CONSTRUCTION WORKERS ARE CONTRACTED.

CLEAN ENERGY, HEALTHY MICHIGAN

The proposed initiated law would establish a renewable portfolio standard of 30 percent.

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB does not have specific policy related to the Renewable Portfolio Standard.

PROMOTE THE VOTE

A proposed constitutional amendment would implement Election Day voter registration, permanently reinstate straight-ticket voting and allow no-reason absentee ballots.

WE DON’T NEED A STRAIGHT TICKET EVEN IN THE PRIMARY’S,

ABSENTEE ballots should be by request only,

Implications to Farm Bureau Policy: MFB policy opposes reducing the voter registration deadline. MFB policy is silent on straight-ticket voting and no-reason absentee ballots.
